Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane was recommended to me by a friend (thanks, Tobie!) who thought of it while she was reading one of my novels. When I first started reading it, I immediately saw why. The similarities between one of my characters and Aaron were present, and for that reason alone, my interest was piqued. Although it has a completely different storyline, I knew I’d enjoy this one.
The main character has a dreadful past that’s haunted her. Her husband has a troubled past as well, but … don’t even get me started on her husband. The way the story opens lets the reader in on a small part of his secret and reveals his personality, and right away, I disliked him. Something Big Happens, and as the story moves along, the police, the main character, and the town start to realize there might be more going on than what they originally thought. Clues seem to lead the police to nowhere concrete.
By the time I got to the end, I had no idea that that is what was going to happen. Kane does a fantastic job at keeping the reader guessing about who’s really telling the truth, who might be lying, who’s got something to hide. But one small detail in the line at the revealing moment made me realize who it was before I turned the page. I was floored!
Those who follow me know I enjoy a good thriller/suspense novel, and this one did not disappoint. I like the different points of view so that we can get a better look at the same subject from a different lens. I like the breadcrumbs that were left – and you don’t even realize they’re breadcrumbs but then at the end, all the right breadcrumbs come trailing back in your mind and that is a good setup in a book.
The characters are believable and likeable, you sympathize with the protagonist. There’s tension and suspense that propels the reader forward.
I enjoyed this book!
