Book Review: THE SOULMATE by Sally Hepworth

Background is a close-up, transparent image of the book cover for Sally Hepworth's THE SOULMATE; an image of the sea crashing around rocks at the bottom of a cliff, looking down from the edge of the cliff, with purple flowers growing along the edge of the cliff. Foreground: 5 gold stars at the top middle. A physical copy of the book along with an iPad copy are in the middle. Bottom black text: "So, so good! I'll be recommending it widely!" Kathleen Foxx.

Wow—what a page-turner! This is a very well-written book with plenty of tension. The past and present timelines are seamlessly woven together and connect at just the right points. I loved the different POVs, which are also cleverly intertwined. The line-level writing is spectacular and many lines made me pause to read over them again or highlight them because they resonated with me so much. It’s a voice-y, twisty, thrilling ride from beginning to end, and the post-climax wrap-up was very well executed. I can see why the author is a NYT Bestseller!

We find out right away what happened; the trick is figuring out how and why it happened, and so we go on this tension-ridden journey with the two main characters as marital secrets are exposed and truths are unravelled. The author tastefully tackles mental health throughout, as well. There are so many curiosity seeds dropped, which had me theorizing the whole time, and the jaw-dropping moments happen at exactly the right times. Every chapter made me want to keep reading, and I read the entire thing in one evening, staying up til 2am because I couldn’t put it down. This was easily a 5-star read for me.

So, so good! I’ll be recommending it widely!
